Teams…

OK, a few thoughts about the “Team concept”, in Real Estate.

I am probably going to offend those that are involved in the team approach to real estate, but then again, I suppose it is up to them to justify this rather bizarre arrangement.

I am not against teams. In fact, I used to play hockey on a team. I occasionally play on a slow-pitch team, and any team I play on in the future will probably start with the term, “old timers”.

 As a concept, I suppose that if you list your property with a Team, you would have all the members focused on your property…or do you? If you call the office to speak to someone with regards to feedback, questions, concerns…who answers the phone? Who calls you back? How reliable is the communication chain?

 I am not against any innovative approach that helps people get their property sold, in fact I am all for it. But what bothers me, is what I see as an unnecessary layer of “red tape” to simply get a call through to your Realtor to ask a simple question. Let’s role play for a minute…it’ll be fun!


Seller Smith: Hello, is Tim in?

Receptionist: Not at the moment, can I take a message and have someone get back to you?

Seller Smith: Just tell him that the plumber has been here and the water is back on, he will know what it’s about.

Receptionist: I will page him the message.

Josh (team member #1) Hello, Mr. Smith? It’s Josh, from Tim’s Team returning your call. Can I help you?

Seller Smith: Uh, no, I just wanted to tell Tim that the water is back on and the inspector can do the inspection as we discussed.

Josh: Fantastic! Which property is it?

Seller Smith: Well, it’s on my property on
Main street

Josh: Excellent!  Which one?

Seller Smith: (sigh), the one you have listed…
123 Main Street

Josh: Awesome! Just a minute while I grab the file. Oh, I see that we have a deal pending on it.

Seller Smith: Yes, we accepted the offer yesterday.

Josh: Oh…I am sorry, I’m a buyer Specialist, I don’t think I can help you with this. Let me put you through to Jessica, she’s one of our Listing Specialists….just hold while I transfer your call….

Jessica (team member #2) Hi, this is Jessica, I’m not in to take your call right now, but if you are calling after 5pm we will get back to you by 5 pm tomorrow, please leave a message and I or one of our Team members will be more than happy to assist you! And remember, our team is available to make your Real Estate experience as easy as possible, Have a Super Day!
